✨ NOT ONLY… BUT ALSO

Esta estructura se usa para dar énfasis cuando queremos decir que hay más de una cosa positiva (o negativa) sobre alguien o algo. Es como decir en español:

“No solo hizo esto, sino que también hizo aquello.”

🧠 ¿Qué expresa?

• Adición enfática (añadir algo más, con fuerza).
• Se puede usar con:
  • verbos
  • sustantivos
  • adjetivos
  • adverbios
  • oraciones completas

🔧 ESTRUCTURA BÁSICA:

Not only… but also…

Puedes usarla de dos formas:

✅ 1. Forma directa (común en conversación)

👉 Sujeto + verbo + not only + cosa 1 + but also + cosa 2

📘 Ejemplos:

1. She not only sings but also dances.
   (No solo canta, sino que también baila.)
2. They not only cleaned the house but also cooked dinner.
   (No solo limpiaron la casa, sino que también cocinaron.)
3. He is not only intelligent but also kind.
   (No solo es inteligente, sino también amable.)
4. We visited not only Paris but also Rome.
   (Visitamos no solo París, sino también Roma.)
5. The movie was not only boring but also too long.
   (La película no solo fue aburrida, sino también muy larga.)

✅ 2. Inversión enfática (más formal o literaria)

👉 Not only + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo… but also…

Cuando «not only» va al comienzo de la oración, se hace inversión (como en preguntas):

   (No solo olvidó mi cumpleaños, sino que además no se disculpó.)
   🔍 Inversión: Did he forget…
7. Not only was the hotel expensive, but it was also dirty.
   (No solo era caro el hotel, sino también sucio.)
   🔍 Inversión: Was the hotel…
8. Not only do they work hard, but they also help others.
   (No solo trabajan duro, sino que también ayudan a otros.)
9. Not only had she finished her work, but she had also cleaned the kitchen.
   (No solo había terminado su trabajo, sino que también limpió la cocina.)
10. Not only will we visit London, but we’ll also go to Oxford.
    (No solo visitaremos Londres, sino también Oxford.)

🎯 CASOS Y VARIACIONES

Sustantivos:

• She speaks not only English but also French.

Verbos:

• He not only reads fast but also remembers everything.

Adjetivos:

• The car is not only fast but also safe.

Frases completas:

• Not only did he pass the exam, but he also got the highest grade.

⚠️ NOTAS IMPORTANTES

• Si usas «not only» al inicio, usa inversión como si fuera una pregunta:
  • ❌ Not only he forgot…
  • ✅ Not only did he forget…
• «But also» puede ir antes del verbo, del adjetivo o del sujeto, según lo que se quiera enfatizar.

✅ COMPARACIÓN SIMPLE (sin / con énfasis):

Not only is she smart, but she also speaks English fluently.
(No solo es inteligente, sino que también habla inglés con fluidez.)

2.

If I were taller, I would run faster and more confidently.
(Si fuera más alto, correría más rápido y con más confianza.)

3.

The cake was not only delicious but also beautifully decorated.
(El pastel no solo estaba delicioso, sino también bellamente decorado.)

4.

I wish I had studied more carefully for the test.
(Ojalá hubiera estudiado con más cuidado para el examen.)

5.

If only they had arrived earlier, they would have seen the fireworks.
(Si tan solo hubieran llegado antes, habrían visto los fuegos artificiales.)

6.

Not only did he clean the room, but he also organized everything neatly.
(No solo limpió la habitación, sino que organizó todo ordenadamente.)

7.

The homework was not only finished on time but also checked by the teacher.
(La tarea no solo se terminó a tiempo, sino que también fue revisada por el profesor.)

(No solo son educados los estudiantes, sino que también participan activamente.)

(Los documentos no solo fueron firmados, sino también cuidadosamente guardados.)
🟢 Pasiva + adverbio

I wish it weren’t raining so heavily right now.
(Ojalá no estuviera lloviendo tan fuerte ahora.)

If he had spoken more clearly, everyone would have understood.
(Si él hubiera hablado más claramente, todos habrían entendido.)

Not only do I wish I had listened to you, but I also regret ignoring your advice.
(No solo desearía haberte escuchado, sino que también me arrepiento de ignorarte.)

The food wasn’t only tasty but also healthily prepared.
(La comida no solo estaba sabrosa, sino también preparada de forma saludable.)

If the instructions had been written better, we wouldn’t have made mistakes.
(Si las instrucciones hubieran sido mejor redactadas, no habríamos cometido errores.)
