Cláusulas Relativas (Relative Clauses)

🧠 ¿Qué es una cláusula relativa?

Una cláusula relativa es una parte de una oración que nos da más información sobre un sustantivo (persona, cosa, lugar, tiempo o manera).
👉 Se introducen con pronombres relativos o adverbios relativos.

Ejemplo básico:

• The boy who is wearing a hat is my brother.
  (El niño que lleva sombrero es mi hermano.)

🧩 ¿Para qué sirven?

1. Unir dos ideas sin repetir.
2. Describir o identificar mejor a personas, cosas, lugares, etc.

🔗 1. PRONOMBRES RELATIVOS

🟡 NOTA:

• «That» puede reemplazar a who o which, especialmente en lenguaje informal.
• «Whose» nunca se reemplaza.

🔁 EJEMPLOS CON PRONOMBRES RELATIVOS

1. The teacher who teaches math is very strict.
2. The cat that sleeps on the couch is mine.
3. The phone which was on the table is gone.
4. The man whose son studies here is a doctor.
5. The student who answered quickly got a prize.
6. I lost the keys that you gave me.
7. The girl whose voice is loud sings very well.
8. The movie which we watched was boring.
9. That’s the boy who broke the window.
10. The car that crashed was very old.

🌍 2. ADVERBIOS RELATIVOS

🟡 NOTAS:

• «Where» y «when» son muy comunes.
• «How» solo se usa cuando va acompañado de una explicación indirecta.

🧠 ¿Qué es una explicación indirecta con how?

Una explicación indirecta (o «reported explanation») ocurre cuando no repetimos directamente una pregunta o una exclamación, sino que la integramos dentro de una oración más larga.

👉 En vez de decir:
«How did she do it?» (pregunta directa)
Decimos:
«I don’t know how she did it.» (explicación indirecta)

🔍 ¿Por qué se considera relativo?

Porque «how» está introduciendo una cláusula que explica la manera en que ocurrió algo.
Y como toda cláusula relativa, modifica o completa el significado de lo que se dice.

✅ ESTRUCTURA

Verbo principal + how + sujeto + verbo

📘 EJEMPLOS CON EXPLICACIONES INDIRECTAS

1. I don’t know how she did it.
   (No sé cómo lo hizo.)
   → “how she did it” explica la manera.
2. He explained how he fixed the computer.
   (Él explicó cómo arregló el computador.)
3. She told me how she learned to speak French.
   (Ella me dijo cómo aprendió a hablar francés.)
4. We’re learning how plants grow.
   (Estamos aprendiendo cómo crecen las plantas.)
5. They showed us how they built the house.
   (Nos mostraron cómo construyeron la casa.)
6. Can you tell me how this works?
   (¿Puedes decirme cómo funciona esto?)
   → ¡Ojo! Aunque es una pregunta, la estructura es indirecta.
7. I wonder how he managed to escape.
   (Me pregunto cómo logró escapar.)
8. She knows how to play the piano.
   (Ella sabe cómo tocar el piano.)
   → «how to» + verbo = estructura muy común.
9. We forgot how they made the cake.
   (Olvidamos cómo hicieron el pastel.)
10. He described how the accident happened.
    (Describió cómo ocurrió el accidente.)

❌ ¿Qué NO es una explicación indirecta?

• Preguntas directas:
  🚫 How did he do that?
  ✅ I don’t know how he did that.

1. That’s the school where I studied.
2. I remember the day when we met.
3. This is the place where they filmed the movie.
4. Do you remember the year when he moved here?
5. I know how he solved the problem.
6. That was the moment when I understood everything.
7. The café where we met is now closed.
8. The month when she left was cold.
9. I don’t understand how you finished so fast.
10. That’s the house where I grew up.
